(Malibu, Ca) Senior goalkeeper Brielle Preece of the Pepperdine women’s soccer team earned a spot on the West Coast Conference’s All-Academic first team today, while sophomore forward Brie Welch was rewarded with honorable mention status.
Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS), a psychology major, earned the WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second straight season. Preece also made the All-WCC first team for the second straight year. Earlier this week, she was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region first team. She led the WCC in goals-against average and shutouts both overall (0.84, nine) and in league play (0.42, five) in 2018. She set the Pepperdine career record for goals-against average (0.59) and finished fourth in shutouts (23). Preece earned WCC All-Academic honorable mention status in 2017. She was named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award this season.
Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS), an art major, was second on the team with three goals and eight points this season. Her goals came against Indiana, San Francisco and Portland. She started all 19 games.
To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 grade-point average, have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing, and participate in at least 50 percent of the season’s contests.
Pepperdine finished the 2018 season with an 11-6-2 record and in third place in the WCC with a 6-1-2 mark.
