CLU Track & Field: CLU Coach Matt Lea Releases 2019 Spring Schedule

(Thousand Oaks, Ca) Head Coach Matt Lea announced the Cal Lutheran Track & Field 2019 Schedule, Monday afternoon, featuring 12 meets leading up to the NCAA Division III Championships at the end of May.

“I’m excited for the schedule that we have put together this year and feel that it gives our team the best possible opportunities to get ready and be ready for the end of the season when it matters the most at the SCIAC and NCAA Championships!” said Lea.

The Kingsmen and Regals debut on February 16 at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Corners meet and return to Claremont, Calif., the next weekend for the Rossi Relays Invitational on the 23rd.

They then ramp up to five meets in the month of March alone, opening and closing the month with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Multi Duals No. 1 and 2. Cal Lutheran will host the first conference meet on March 2 at Redlands University.

March also features the Occidental Distance Carnival/Spring Break Classic on the 9th, Redlands Invitation on the 15th and two-day Jim Klein Combined Events in Santa Barbara, Calif., on the 21-22nd.

The following month brings on the third and final SCIAC Multi-Dual on April 13, hosted by Occidental, before all the conference athletes converge to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 27-28th for the SCIAC Championships.

Last season, junior Kendall Guidetti took home the conference women’s long jump title at 5.67 meters for the second consecutive year in a row, narrowly beating out her runner-up by just .01 meters. Joining her on the podium, Alexa Barnes threw the discus for 38.31 meters, good for second place, and Mordan Snyder notched 11.19 meters in the triple jump for a third-place finish.

The Kingsmen also picked up four podium finishes, including silver by the men’s 4×1000 meter relay team of Obasi Dees, Chris Brodnax, Trent Mosley and Wendell O’Brien. Dees went on to additionally win bronze in the 200-meter dash. Brodnax and Timmy Kahovec both also reached the podium in third place; Brodnax ran the 400-meter dash in 49.30 seconds and Kahovec ran the 800-meter in 1:56.33.

Following the SCIAC Championships, the team has two more opportunities to qualify for nationals at the Occidental Invitational on May 11 and the Redlands Final Qualifier on May 15-16.

It all culminates to the NCAA Division III National Champions in Geneva, Ohio, on May 24-25. Last year Kelsey Rouse represented Cal Lutheran as just the third Regal in program history to qualify in the heptathlon and latest since 2008. She accrued a total of 4010 points, the fifth highest sum in program history, and finished as the No. 20 female heptathlete in the nation.
