Pepperdine Men’s Baseball: Waves Clinch Series With Win Over Gonzaga

Pepperdine Baseball Pitcher, (JR) Easton Lucas

MALIBU, Calif. – Junior Easton Lucas of the Pepperdine baseball team threw a complete game in Saturday’s 3-1 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga.

The Waves (12-7, 4-1 WCC) clinch the series over the Bulldogs (9-11, 2-3 WCC) for the second time in three years.

BIG WAVES

  • Junior LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) threw a gem for his second win of the year. He threw a complete game, giving up only five hits and striking out six.
  • Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) had the best day offensively for the Waves, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run.
  • Sophomore infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 1-for-4 on the day with one of three Waves RBI.
  • Senior outfielder Matt Kanfer (Playa Del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S) had another of the Waves’ RBI, going 1-for-4 on the day as well.

GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning, as three straight singles from Wyatt Young, McAfee and Kanfer got the Waves the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead through one inning of play.

Gonzaga answered back in the second on a single up the middle. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Waves got the run back thanks to a leadoff double by Cory Wills, a sacrifice fly from Duncan McKinnon and an RBI single from Joe Caparis, to take a 2-1 lead after three.

Neither team threatened the score until the fifth inning, when McAfee singled to start the inning. He was brought in by an RBI triple from Cook to build the Waves’ lead to a more comfortable 3-1 after five.

Lucas was dealing throughout the whole game, only really being threatened in the second when the Bulldogs scored, and in the top of the ninth, when the opposition got runners to the corners. A popup to first base ended the threat and the game with the Waves clinching their second straight conference series.

UP NEXT
The Waves look to sweep the Bulldogs tomorrow afternoon. Before the game, Pepperdine will be supporting Stand Up To Cancer with a small ceremony, set to begin shortly before the 1 p.m. first pitch.
