Thousand Oaks Library Commemorates “The War To End all Wars”

Grant Brimhall Library

(Thousand Oaks, Ca) This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

“Retreat, Hell! We Just Got Here” The Marines at Belleau Wood: These are the words Marine Capt. Lloyd Williams fired back after a French officer told him to have his company retreat at Belleau Wood. During June 1918, United States Marines fought an epic battle with German forces in a French forest that had been a hunting preserve for nobility. Now men were hunting men. The battle cost the Marines 1,000 killed and another 4,000 wounded, but the German forces were decimated. The French Army was stunned by the Marine victory and issued an order renaming Belleau Wood “Bois de la Brigade de Marine”. Dr. Roger McGrath, historian and contributor to the History Channel, discusses this famous WWI battle at the Grant R. Brimhall Library on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
